CCDA 2019 Fall Conference:

Cultivating Inclusive Practices in Career Development

Building from the foundation laid at the Fall 2018 CCDA conference on diversity, this conference will support career development practitioners from all work contexts to dive deeper into the normative logics that undergird our policies, practices, events, and processes. Together, we will inquire, interrogate, and ultimately intentionally deviate from the norm in order to nuance and expand our commitments and practices related to diversity, inclusion, and equity in career development.

Featuring Key Note Speakers

Kathryn Joan Leslie and Sean C. Kenney of Project Deviate

Project Deviate’s Kathryn Joan Leslie and Sean C. Kenney will facilitate an interactive and experiential session that engages two main questions: what counts as normal in our practices? And who or what might that exclude?  Audience members will be challenged to think deeply about diversity and inclusion by considering hidden or invisible bias through the lens of intersectionality.

Project Deviate LLC is an education, training, and consulting firm that supports organizations in engaging diversity, equity, and inclusion work. We partner with organizations in creating habits that build equitable workplaces, through getting curious about what counts as “normal” and exploring who or what that normal leaves out. We envision a world where organizations continuously open new horizons for thriving and belonging by intentionally deviating from the norm. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @projectdeviateconsulting and on the web at www.ProjectDeviateConsulting.com.

Kathryn Joan Leslie (she/they) brings 10 years’ experience in teaching and training in both corporate and higher education contexts, as well as a background in career development and coaching, human resources, and recruiting. Kathryn founded the Utah Career Development Association in 2014 in large part to address the need for career practitioners in Utah to gain vital resources on how to serve marginalized clients. This path led Kathryn to pursue a PhD in organizational communication. Kathryn’s research focuses on power and difference in organizations and organizing, with particular attention to how normative practices of professionalism discipline queered, gendered, and racialized bodies.

Sean C. Kenney (he/him/his) brings over 10 years’ experience working in organizational contexts inside and outside of the United States across varied industries including nonprofit organizing, youth development, media production, higher education, and international NGOs. He is currently completing a master’s degree in organizational communication at the University of Colorado Boulder. Sean’s research focuses on how organizations practice and implement diversity and inclusion initiatives. Since 2014, he has been a producer for OutSources, Colorado’s only weekly on-air radio program dedicated to queer issues
